Frank-Walter Steinmeier to run for second presidential term

On Friday, current German president, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, announced his intention to run for a second term after finishing his five-year tenure next year.

A second presidential term

At a press conference in Berlin on Friday, the German president, Frank-Walter Steinmeier (SPD), announced that he would be running for a second term next year. Steinmeier started his five-year term back in 2017 and is seen as one of Germany’s more popular and trusted politicians.

Steinmeier was appointed to the largely ceremonial role after serving in a number of political posts, including Minister of Foreign Affairs, Vice-Chancellor and Chief of the Federal Chancellery. Now, Steinmeier wants to “accompany the country on its way into the future” in a second term as president of Germany.

In September, Germany will undergo a general election, in which the SPD is currently polling in third place, some way behind the CDU / CSU union and the Greens. However, should Steinmeier retain the support of the newly elected parties, he could still be elected president again next year.
