Learn about the historical and present-day Staatsoper Hamburg
The first public open house in Germany was actually established in Hamburg in 1678, and since then opera and theatre have been an important part of the city’s cultural pull, with Hamburg hosting several events each year.
Did you know that the first stone for the former Stadttheater, located on the site of the present-day Staatsoper was laid in 1826? Unfortunately, this structure and neighbouring buildings were destroyed during an air raid in 1943 during WWII. It was rebuilt following the end of the war and the present-day Staatsoper officially opened its doors on October 15, 1955, with Mozart's Die Zauberflöte.
