Tiepolo - the best painter of Venice

This special exhibition sees the State Gallery Stuttgart present its outstanding collection of Tiepolo’s works, together with a selection of international loans that includes paintings, drawings and prints. Entitled “Tiepolo”, the show consists of more than 100 pieces of work from the famous Venetian painter and marks the first show in any German-speaking country to span the artist's oeuvre.

Opening ahead of the 250th anniversary of Tiepolo’s death on March 2020, the exhibition starts with three of the painter’s most unusual creations, including “The Rest on the Flight to Egypt”, which he painted in Madrid towards the end of his life.

Tiepolo’s triumph of the imagination

The anniversary exhibition brings together Tiepolo’s mythological and historical paintings, as well as examples of his underrated religious sketches and compositions. It highlights his virtuoso storytelling skills as well as his captivating visual language, that brings together elegance, theatre, a touch of humour and even caricature.

Tiepolo’s belief in the importance of imagination and illusion are also highlighted throughout the exhibition, as it aims to initiate a modern-day reassessment of the artist’s life work and shine a light on his significance at the edge between the Baroque era and the Age of Enlightenment.
