Stiftung Warentest declares which supermarket chips are the best in Germany

Crunchy, golden, salty, fluffy and missing some unpronounceable chemicals: Stiftung Warentest has released the results of its study into the best supermarket oven chip in Germany.

Bofrost oven chips declared best in the land

Germany’s best-known consumer organisation Stiftung Warentest has named Bofrost oven chips as the least unhealthy oven chips money can buy in a German supermarket.

The verdict was announced following a Stiftung Warentest investigation, the Öko-Test, dedicated to finding which German supermarket chips were the best when it came to forgoing stabilising and preservative chemicals.

Coming in at a steep 6,30 euros per 1200g bag, the Bofrost chips were victorious in both the ingredient and the sensory experience category, which considered appearance, smell, taste, how the chip felt in your mouth and texture. This was the most important category, given a 45 percent weighting in the eventual decision to award the Backofen Pommes Frites chips the “sehr gut” label.

For the more thrifty among us, Rewe's Ja! Pommes Frites and Aldi Sud’s Gut Bio Pommes Frites, Naturland also scored highly in the test.

Which oven chips to avoid in Germany

Overall, 10 of the oven chip brands tested were given a “gut” title - seven of which were organic brands - three brands were declared “befriedigend” and one was named “ausreichend” (sufficient).

Two of the brands considered in the test were found to contain harmful ingredients. These were the oven chips from Börderhold, which contain high amounts of glycoalkaloids. Glycoalkaloids are a toxin which potatoes naturally produce to fight off insects but can cause health problems such as gastrointestinal upset.

Rewe's Beste Wahl Süßkartoffel Pommes product proved itself to be the absolute schlimmste Wahl of the test and was found to contain some not-so-tasty ingredients, namely the potentially carcinogenic 3-MCPD fatty acid.
