Senior Applied Scientist - Logistics Algorithms (all genders)

Role: Senior Applied Scientist - Logistics Algorithms. Drive algorithmic research‑driven software development in Zalando's logistics team, focusing on scheduling, planning and routing decisions in warehouses and predictive warehousing using stochastic optimization. Responsibilities: - Research, design and implement algorithms and predictive models for logistics. - Deliver end‑to‑end solutions: prototype, production software, testing and operation of highly available systems. - Influence research and development methodologies to build scalable, data‑driven architecture. - Support and coach other Applied Scientists, sharing knowledge and expertise. - Collaborate with engineers, product owners and cross‑functional teams. Qualifications: - Master's or PhD in Mathematics, Computer Science or a related quantitative field. - Minimum 6 years of applied research experience. - Industry experience in algorithmic software development (Java, Kotlin, Python, etc.). - Proven ability to translate business problems into mathematical models and solve them with state‑of‑the‑art methods. - Expertise in at least one area: advanced algorithmic techniques (combinatorics, graph theory, control theory), mathematical modeling (operations research, statistics) or machine learning (forecasting, Bayesian networks). - Strong autonomy and collaborative skills in an agile, cross‑functional environment.
