The Role & the team

Are you an experienced Engineering Manager passionate about leveraging technology for positive change? Join our Sustainability and D&I team at Zalando to lead a dedicated engineering team in shaping digital experiences that empower over 50 million customers to shop in line with their environmental and social values. This high-impact, visible role offers you the chance to drive crucial initiatives, foster a culture of engineering excellence within a talented international team, and collaborate across Product, Design, and engineering to solve complex, meaningful challenges at Zalando

  • Lead with Purpose: Steer a product-driven engineering team, ensuring efficient delivery cycles and embedding a philosophy of continuous improvement in all processes.

  • Active Collaboration: Manage stakeholder communication and cross-team dependencies, working closely with Product leaders and Product Designers to strategize, design, and execute end-to-end solutions.

  • Architect & Prioritize: Take ownership of critical architectural decisions, actively engaging in the development and refinement of internal tools. Collaborate closely with your team to shape the technical roadmap, ensuring that each decision is well-documented and communicated. Foster a culture of continuous improvement by encouraging thoughtful debate and learning from past incidents to drive the evolution of both tools and practices.

  • Innovate and Adapt: Champion an innovative problem-solving culture, driving the adoption of new technologies and methodologies to create forward-thinking solutions and ensure your team's readiness for upcoming technological changes.

  • Build for Reliability: Engineer for excellence by ensuring your team's services meet all reliability dimensions while strengthening the operational excellence in the team.

  • Proven Engineering Leadership: An innovative leader with 3+ years of experience in managing and developing high-performing engineering teams, with a clear track record of delivering impactful results.

  • Technical Depth & Collaborative Decision-Making: The ability to dive deep into technical challenges, drive key architectural decisions in collaboration with your team and Principal Engineers, and foster a culture of technical excellence.

  • Strategic Problem-Solver & Continuous Improver: A creative and analytical thinker who consistently seeks to enhance systems, processes, and team dynamics by applying both established best practices and emerging technological insights.

  • Collaborative & Boundary-Spanning Mindset: An "internal open-source" approach – eager to contribute to and improve solutions beyond your immediate team in a large-scale, diverse technical landscape, fostering strong cross-functional partnerships.

  • Influential Communicator & Innovator: Exceptional communication skills coupled with experience in championing and driving innovation initiatives that span multiple business areas and stakeholder groups.

  • Customer-Obsessed & Mission-Driven: A genuine passion for solving customer problems and a strong alignment with leveraging technology to advance sustainability and D&I initiatives.
