Starting school with confidence: How BBIS supports transitions to Grade 1
For many families, starting primary school is one of childhood's biggest milestones. It is a time of excitement and anticipation, but it can also bring uncertainty.
Will my child be ready? Will they make friends? Will they enjoy coming to school each day?
These are questions many parents ask as they begin looking for the right school. While every child is different, one thing remains the same: a positive start can shape how children feel about learning for years to come.
At BBIS Berlin Brandenburg International School, the transition into Grade 1 is designed to be a positive experience for both children and parents. The school creates an environment where children feel welcomed, valued and ready to grow.
Learning begins with relationships
Children learn best when they feel safe, supported and connected to the people around them. That is why building strong relationships is at the heart of life at BBIS.
Through the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme, learning is driven by curiosity, inquiry and collaboration. Children are encouraged to ask questions, explore ideas, think independently and learn collaboratively.
Just as importantly, teachers take the time to understand each child as an individual. By recognising their interests, strengths and personality, they create meaningful learning experiences that help children feel a genuine sense of belonging from the very beginning.
Choosing a school is about more than academics
Parents naturally compare curricula, facilities and results when choosing a school. Yet many families say that what ultimately influenced their decision was something much harder to measure: how the school felt.
Could they imagine their child being happy there? Did the teachers seem approachable? Did the children appear engaged and comfortable in their surroundings?
Those first impressions often say as much about a school as any brochure or website.
See school life in action
To help families take that next step, BBIS offers Stay & Play, a complimentary event for families considering entry into Grade 1.
During the session, children take part in a short classroom activity while parents observe, meet members of the school leadership team and gain insight into daily life at the school and the transition into Grade 1.
It is an opportunity to see the learning environment first-hand, understand how children are supported during their first year of primary school and ask questions in an informal setting.
Making an informed decision
Choosing a primary school is an important decision, and every family's priorities are different. Stay & Play gives parents and children the chance to spend time at BBIS before beginning the admissions process, making it easier to decide whether the school is the right fit for their family.
The next BBIS Stay & Play session for prospective Grade 1 families will take place on 2 October 2026. Participation is complimentary and places are limited. Learn more and register here.
