As of October 15, Deutsche Bahn has banned alcohol consumption at all 5.700 train stations across Germany. Here’s what you need to know about the ban and what is still allowed:
DB extends alcohol ban to all stations
Deutsche Bahn’s alcohol ban applies at all train stations as of today. The ban was first announced in late July and initially implemented on September 1, 2026, at Berlin Hauptbahnhof, Berlin Gesundbrunnen, Kiel Hauptbahnhof, and Braunschweig Hauptbahnhof. It has now been extended to all train stations nationwide.
Security staff who patrol Deutsche Bahn stations will implement the ban. Anyone found drinking alcohol on the platform or on station premises risks being thrown out of the station, and those caught breaking the rules multiple times risk a station ban.
“The alcohol ban applies at train stations every day, also when there is a large event,” Deutsche Bahn spokesperson Anja Bröker told the Tagesschau, with reference to ongoing Bundesliga matches. Bröcker said the ban would be enforced particularly strictly on such days.
“Alcohol is not the cause of every altercation, but it can aggravate conflicts and reduce inhibitions,” drugs czar for the federal government, Hendrik Streeck (CDU), told Rheinische Post.
What are the new alcohol rules in German stations?
So what exactly are the new rules? It is now forbidden to drink alcohol in train stations and on platforms across Germany. However, it is still allowed to carry closed alcoholic beverages on platforms and in train stations.
Passengers can also still drink alcohol at bars and cafes in train stations. You can also still drink alcohol on a Deutsche Bahn train, whether you brought it with you or purchased it at the onboard bistro. So you can still enjoy that Feierabendbier on the Regio!
