Deutsche Bahn has announced that 50 million euros will be invested to improve passenger communication systems, including expanding access to an AI agent that provides personalised information.
€50m for “Better Customer Communication”
Deutsche Bahn and the German federal government have earmarked 50 million euros for an emergency programme called “Better Customer Communication” (“Bessere Kundenkommunikation“).
The programme aims to improve passengers’ experience of using the DB Navigator app and Deutsche Bahn website for up-to-date information about timetables, disruptions and cancellations.
Of course, many Deutsche Bahn trains will still be delayed - only 54,8 percent of services were punctual in June 2026 - but passengers will have more up-to-date information about delays, cancellations and which alternative services are available.
How will communication systems improve?
The 50 million euros will be invested in AI software, new IT systems, additional station information screens and other digital services, the national rail operator explained in a press release.
By the end of 2026, the Kiana AI agent, which is already available to passengers logged in to the DB Navigator app, will be available to all passengers using the app or the Deutsche Bahn website. Kiana provides personalised travel updates in over 100 languages.
AI software will also be employed to process disruption reports more quickly, meaning passengers should receive information about delays faster.
Deutsche Bahn added that while it previously took 60 seconds for track change information to reach the DB Navigator app, “information now appears [...] after around two seconds”. However, it is unclear whether this update is part of the Better Customer Communication programme or has already occurred.
Deutsche Bahn will install 7.000 new digital display screens in small and mid-sized train stations across the country. As is already the case in large train stations, the display screens will show the coach sequence, classes, and the following trains scheduled for that platform.
Since Evelyn Palla was appointed CEO of Deutsche Bahn in October 2025, the company has announced several measures to improve the passenger experience on its services.
The first measure aimed to improve station cleanliness and security for passengers and staff, while the second focused on improving amenities, such as toilets and catering services, on trains and at stations.
