People in Germany drove further in 2024 than in 2023, according to figures from the Federal Motor Transport Authority (Kraftfahrtbundesamt or KBA).
Kilometres driven in Germany increased in 2024
Vehicles registered in Germany drove a total of 594 billion kilometres in 2024, according to the latest figures from the KBA, three billion more kilometres than in 2023.
The last time that kilometres driven in Germany saw a year-on-year increase was between 2017 and 2018. In 2018, cars registered in Germany covered a distance of 631 billion kilometres.
The number of cars registered in Germany increased between 2023 and 2024. While the overall distance driven increased annually in 2024, the average distance driven per driver decreased for the tenth consecutive year. In 2024, German drivers drove an average of 12.039 kilometres, just 11 fewer kilometres than in 2023.
Petrol cars drove the furthest
The KBA also broke down the overall distance driven by the type of fuel used by vehicles. Petrol cars drove the furthest stretch of kilometres, covering a total of 283 billion kilometres in 2024.
Diesel cars drove the second-furthest stretch, covering 230 billion kilometres. Electric cars, hybrids and gas-powered cars drove just 81 billion of the total 594 billion kilometres driven in Germany in 2024.
