About this role

We help the world run better
At SAP, we keep it simple: you bring your best to us, and we'll bring out the best in you. We're builders touching over 20 industries and 80% of global commerce, and we need your unique talents to help shape what's next. The work is challenging – but it matters. You'll find a place where you can be yourself, prioritize your wellbeing, and truly belong. What's in it for you? Constant learning, skill growth, great benefits, and a team that wants you to grow and succeed.

What you’ll do

Many complex products — from cars to industrial machinery — need to be tailored to specific customer requirements. Product configuration makes this possible by letting teams create customized product variations without starting from scratch each time. Advanced Variant Configuration simplifies this process and helps customers scale accurate, tailored offerings.

As a software developer on the Advanced Variant Configuration team, you’ll help build and improve features that make customization easier and more reliable for end users. Working with senior engineers and product/UX partners, you’ll write and test code, fix bugs, and contribute small-to-medium scoped features. You’ll learn to apply good software craftsmanship, write automated tests, and follow our CI/CD practices while receiving mentorship through pair programming and code reviews. You’ll also help investigate customer issues and deliver fixes that improve usability and stability. Over time you’ll take on increasing responsibility as you grow your technical skills and product knowledge.

In a nutshell:

  • Help build and improve features for Advanced Variant Configuration to make product customization easier.
  • Write clean, readable code and contribute to small-to-medium scoped tasks under guidance from senior engineers.
  • Learn and apply software craftsmanship practices, coding standards, and version-control workflows (e.g., Git).
  • Write and run automated tests (unit and basic integration) and follow our CI/CD process to ensure safe, frequent releases.
  • Debug and fix bugs, investigate customer-reported issues, and implement stable, user-focused solutions.
  • Pair program, participate in code reviews, and accept mentorship to grow technical skills and product knowledge.
  • Collaborate with product managers and UX to understand requirements and help deliver usable features.
  • Contribute to documentation, reproduce customer scenarios, and support incident triage when needed.

What you bring:

  • Required skills:
    • 0 - 2 years of software development experience (including internships, bootcamps, open-source contributions, or relevant academic projects)
    • Familiarity with at least one programming language or a strong willingness to learn
    • Strong team player who enjoys collaborating, asking questions, and learning from others
    • Self-motivated with a positive, can‑do attitude and willingness to take on new challenges
    • Creative problem‑solver with attention to detail and a commitment to delivering high‑quality code
    • Good English communication skills, both written and verbal, able to explain ideas clearly
    • Outcome‑oriented and customer‑focused, eager to learn how to prioritize work that delivers value
    • Outcome‑oriented mindset, with a focus on delivering value to customers
  • Nice‑to‑have:
    • Beginner domain knowledge about variant configuration or manufacturing
    • Practical experience with version control (Git) and branching workflows
    • Experience writing and running unit tests; basic understanding of integration testing
    • Knowledge about S/4HANA Public Cloud development ecosystem, including CFD (Continuous Feature Delivery), FBE (Feature‑Based Engineering), and DDCI (Distributed Development and Continuous Integration)
    • Knowledge of software security principles and best practices
    • Experience with ABAP and its latest technological advancements, such as RESTful ABAP Programming Model (RAP), as well as proficiency in JavaScript

Meet your team:

Join a collaborative group of motivated engineers who span early‑career to senior levels. The team designs and builds end‑to‑end functionality — front‑end, back‑end, and integrations — for freestyle apps that connect across multiple business processes. You’ll work closely with product and UX, and own small‑to‑medium features from design through delivery. We value curiosity, high‑quality code, automated testing, observability, and shipping customer‑focused solutions quickly and safely
