Role Senior Applied Scientist – Partner Tech, Assortment, Steering & Data Insights (ASDI) The team builds data products and decision systems that improve assortment composition, in‑season steering, demand understanding, partner performance insights and commercial automation for Zalando’s wholesale and Partner Platform businesses. The Senior Applied Scientist focuses on measuring the impact of ASDI products and supporting strategic Partner Tech initiatives through rigorous evaluation. Responsibilities - Lead impact measurement for ASDI products and strategic Partner Tech initiatives, owning the experimentation charter and defining hypotheses, estimands, guardrails and success metrics. - Develop state‑of‑the‑art machine learning and econometric models for observational studies to estimate incremental effects of products, algorithms and recommendations. - Choose appropriate causal designs, using randomized experiments where feasible and quasi‑experimental methods otherwise. - Translate evidence into product decisions, communicating findings, uncertainty and trade‑offs to technical and non‑technical audiences. - Build trusted, extensible KPI frameworks to enable evaluation and prioritisation of multiple products. - Raise the bar for measurement in ASDI by staying up‑to‑date with research in causal machine learning, econometrics and optimisation, defining best practices and mentoring colleagues. Qualifications - PhD in Economics, Econometrics, Statistics, Causal Inference or Causal Machine Learning. - Minimum 2 years industry experience in data science with a focus on experimentation and causal inference. - Deep expertise in causal inference methods, including panel data, doubly robust estimators and quasi‑experimental designs. - Ability to drive scientific workstreams independently and translate research into actionable insights at scale. - Proficient in Python and SQL; experienced with large‑scale data platforms such as Spark or Databricks. - Strong communication skills, able to convey scientific insights to diverse audiences and mentor peers.
