Senior Data Engineer - Marketing Platform (all genders)

Role: ZMS is Zalando's advertising and marketing platform that enables merchants and brands to create highly relevant advertising experiences for shoppers. The team builds the service that powers campaign creation decisions for thousands of merchants across multiple markets, using a modern data stack (Databricks, Delta Lake, Postgres, Airflow). Responsibilities: - Design, develop and maintain data solutions that power campaign decision systems. - Take end‑to‑end ownership of projects in a cross‑functional team, iterating quickly during product development. - Lead data‑engineering competency development within the Marketing platform and mentor colleagues. - Evaluate, adopt and optimise leading‑edge technologies to keep the platform ahead of the curve. - Ensure platform performance, observability and health through tuning and monitoring. Qualifications: - 5–7 years of professional experience in data engineering. - Deep knowledge of distributed data processing (Databricks/Spark preferred) and performance tuning. - Strong skills in building observability and health checks for data pipelines. - Practical experience optimizing databases or storage engines. - Proficient in a general‑purpose programming language (e.g., Python, Java, Scala, Go, Rust) and SQL for data transformation performance. - Proven track record designing, building and evolving data models and processing systems. - Passion for knowledge sharing and mentoring team members. - Nice‑to‑have: experience with cloud delivery models and Kubernetes, dbt, API design, real‑time streaming pipelines, and operational excellence in production data systems.
