Amazon Germany workers to strike the week before Christmas

Amazon Germany workers to strike the week before Christmas

If you were expecting something from Amazon to arrive in the post before Christmas, don’t hold your breath. Just a few weeks after they put down their tools on Black Friday, Amazon Germany workers have been called to strike once again - this time in the week before Christmas.

Amazon employees strike until December 21

The union Verdi has called upon Amazon employees at a distribution centre in Bad Hersfeld, East Hesse - the retail giant’s largest shipping centre in Germany - to stop working during the crucial run-up to the national holiday next Wednesday.

The strike will begin on Monday, December 16, and continue until Saturday, December 21, the union said. With the action, Verdi wants to lend weight to its demands for a collective bargaining agreement.

Dispute over collective wage agreement

Amazon workers in Germany have gone on strike repeatedly since May 2013 - without managing to solve an increasingly deadlocked dispute.

At the end of November, employees at the Bad Hersfeld distribution centre stopped working to coincide with the Black Friday discount campaign - typically one of the busiest times of the year.
