Germany’s national postal service has announced that it will temporarily suspend package deliveries to the United States in response to President Donald Trump’s tariffs.

Restrictions on packages from Germany to the US

Deutsche Post, Germany’s national postal service, is to temporarily suspend package deliveries to the US in response to Trump’s tariffs.

The announcement came from DHL, which runs Deutsche Post’s package delivery service. “The reason for the restrictions, which we expect to be temporary, is new processes for postal delivery which have been put in place by the US authorities," the company said in a press release.

DHL said question marks remain over who will pay for the tariff charges and how. Packages sent to the US which are worth less than 800 US Dollars (688 euros) are now being taxed at 15 percent.

Postal services in multiple European countries, including Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria and Denmark, have all suspended package deliveries to the US for the time being.

DHL said that it is "closely monitoring the further developments and is in contact with U.S. authorities", and that it intends to "resume postal goods shipping to the U.S. as quickly as possible".

Customers can still send “express” packages

In the meantime, customers can still send packages using DHL’s “express” service, which is more expensive, for packages weighing up to 70 kilogrammes.

Customers can also send packages worth up to 100 US Dollars (86 euros) as a “gift”, but these packages will be subject to more scrutiny from US customs authorities to make sure they are not commercial packages.

In March 2025, President Trump announced an incoming 20 percent tariff on imports from the European Union. Intensifying a potential trade war, in mid-July, Trump threatened the EU with a 30 percent import tariff. In late July, Trump and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced a deal: most European goods would be charged a 15 percent tariff.
