Deutschlandticket report reveals price rise for 2027

A report from the Deutschlandticket Coordination Council has revealed how much the nationwide public transport ticket is likely to cost in 2027.

How much will the Deutschlandticket cost next year?

Citing a Deutschlandticket Coordination Council paper, Rheinische Post has reported that the price of the monthly public transport subscription is likely to increase from 63 euros to 66,90 euros in 2027.

The council of federal, state and municipal representatives, alongside public transport associations, is expected to confirm the 2027 price over the course of the day on September 30.

When it was initially launched in 2023, the ticket, which allows unlimited travel on public and regional transport across Germany, cost 49 euros per month. The price has since increased annually. 

However, 2027 marks the first year that the Deutschlandticket price rise is calculated using a price index. The index uses a formula that considers changes in employment costs, energy costs and general costs to calculate whether the ticket price should increase and by how much.

Fuel tax cut, but no Deutschlandticket price freeze?

Responding to the price rise, the German Federation for the Environment and Nature Conservation (BUND) said the government’s decision to reintroduce a fuel tax cut but not stabilise the Deutschlandticket price is unacceptable. 

Detlef Neuß, Honorary Chairman of the passenger association Pro Bahn, agrees. “[T]here should also be a discount for Deutschlandticket users,” Neuß told Tagesschau.

The fuel tax cut, which will apply from October 1, is set to cost the taxpayer 2,5 billion euros. While Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil (SPD) supports introducing a windfall tax on fuel companies, Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Economy Minister Katherina Reiche (both CDU) oppose it.

When the Deutschlandticket first launched in May 2023, around 6,4 million people bought a subscription. Currently, around 14,5 million people hold a subscription.

In 2025, the ticket was more popular than ever. Every month, an average of 14,2 million people had a Deutschlandticket subscription, nearly 20 percent of the population of Germany.
