Deutsche Bahn has announced that trains between Berlin and Munich will be severely disrupted until Thursday, July 10. Here’s what passengers need to know:

Suspected arson disrupts Berlin-Munich trains

Deutsche Bahn is expecting ICE trains between Berlin and Munich to be severely disrupted and delayed until Thursday morning.

A suspected arson attack in Hirschaid has completely closed a stretch of the Berlin-Munich route between Bamberg and Forchheim (Oberfranken).

The fire has severely damaged an underpass. “As such, the rails running over the underpass cannot be used. Repair plans are underway,” a Deutsche Bahn spokesperson told the dpa.

What does the disruption mean for passengers?

Passengers travelling with public transport and long-distance trains are affected by the disruption. Regional trains between Nuremberg and Bamberg will not run, and the S1 train travelling towards Nuremberg ends in Forchheim (Oberfranken).

Replacement bus services will be in operation between Forchheim (Oberfranken) and Bamberg. Due to roadworks, the replacement buses will not stop at the intervening stations commonly served on the route: Strullendorf, Hirschaid, Buttenheim, Eggolsheim and Forchheim Nord. Taxis departing from Forchheim and Bamberg will bring passengers to these stops.

Alternatively, passengers using regional transport between Nuremberg and Bamberg are encouraged to divert their journeys via Würzburg. Passengers can use the RB53, RE54 or RE20 between Bamberg and Würzburg and the RE10 between Würzburg and Nuremberg.

Trains between Berlin and Munich, as well as any other long-distance trains that use the route between Erfurt and Nuremberg, will be diverted, resulting in a journey that is approximately 90 minutes longer.

Trains will not stop at Erlangen and Bamberg, and certain IC services between Leipzig and Nuremberg via Jena have been cancelled. Some services between Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe and Gera have also been cancelled.
