Since 1875, the Bavarian State Opera (Bayerische Staatsoper) has organised the Munich Opera Festival, an annual highlight in Munich's cultural calendar.

As one of the oldest festivals of its kind, the event consists of a six-week programme of spectacular productions that delight thousands of visitors every summer, including premieres, first-time performances and free, open-air "Opera for All" (Oper für Alle) concerts.

Opera, ballet and more at the Munich Opera Festival

General Music Director Kirill Petrenko will open this year's Munich Opera Festival programme at the National Theatre, conducting Richard Wagner's Tristan und Isolde, with Jonas Kaufmann and Anja Harteros singing the leading roles.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's opera Idomeneo will be performed, featuring director Antú Romero Nunes, together with conductor Constantinos Carydis in the Prinzregententheater. The Bavarian State Ballet (Bayerisches Staatsballett) will also present a world premiere called Today is Tomorrow.

Opera for All

Get ready for the open-air opera experience, Opera for All, on the two last Saturdays of the festival. On July 17, the open-air festival concert will take place, with numerous opera favourites ringing out across the city plaza. On July 31, the Munich Opera Festival will conclude with an open-air performance of Richard Wagner's Tristan und Isolde
