Sarbojonin Durgotshob: One of the biggest Indian festivals in Berlin
Experience a vibrant Indian festival, right in the heart of Berlin, at the Sarbojonin Durgotshob. All are invited to enjoy the dancing, music, and other traditional activities.
Experience a true Indian festival in Berlin
The vibrant festivals of India are testament to the country’s diverse range of traditions and cultures. They mark the birthday of gods and goddesses, seasonal changes, and a lot more. Festivals are celebrated jointly, irrespective of people’s caste, religion or language, bringing them closer together and creating stronger bonds.
One such festival is being celebrated in the heart of Berlin. Durga Puga is the biggest Bengali festival, celebrated in honour of the Hindu Goddess Maa Durga. The festival celebrates the triumph of good over evil, when Goddess Durga killed the demon Mahishasur.
To mark the occasion, from October 11 to 15, 2021, Ignite eV Berlin is putting on Sarbojanin Durgotshob at the Sri Ganesha Hindu temple in Berlin. All are invited to join the festival, which will feature classical Indian dance, music, and other traditional activities. Entry is free, but donations are welcome; they can be made at the venue or online.

Each day of the festival will feature a variety of different activities. Alongside worshipping rituals like Pujo (morning prayer) and Sondhya Aroti (evening prayer), there will also be cultural events. Expect to see little kids dancing to Indian songs, men and women dressed in colourful saris and traditional clothes, and older people doing Natak (theatre). Also present will be some members of the Indian Embassy as honourable guests.
Then, on the evening of October 15, the Sindur Khela, which is a tradition in Bengal, will take place. Witnessing this ritual is like seeing the true essence of India. Married Hindu women apply sindoor (vermilion) to the forehead and feet of the goddess and offer her sweets. They then put sindoor on each other’s faces and give each other sweets.
