Germany's next heatwave peaks Friday, 39C "cannot be ruled out"

German Weather Service (DWD) has forecast that another heatwave is heading our way. Temperatures will start rising on Thursday and peak on Friday.

Heatwave to hit hard this weekend

There has been little respite from heatwaves in summer 2026, and another one is heading our way. According to the DWD, temperatures will start to heat up across the country on Thursday. 

While much of northern Germany will be cloudy, we will be feeling sweaty, as temperatures reach somewhere between 30 and 37 degrees celsius.

The heatwave is set to peak on Friday, when “temperatures between 31 and 38 degrees will be reached across the country,” DWD meteorologist Markus Übel explained, “in the warmest regions, the west and southwest, temperatures of 39 degrees cannot be ruled out”. 

Temperatures will begin to drop on Saturday. "In the north-west in particular, temperatures will no longer reach the 30-degree mark,” Übel explained. “In the east and south, however, it will often be sunny again, with temperatures of 30 to 37 degrees bringing the heat of high summer once more.”

Depending on how the weather develops, the DWD may issue heat warnings for both Friday and Saturday.

Storm risks from Sunday

As the temperatures continue to drop on Sunday, the chances of rainy and stormy weather will increase. According to Übel, much of the country should expect rain in the coming weeks.

However, just how widespread and heavy the rain will be currently varies greatly between different meteorological models.
