The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) has released figures about how many babies are born over the Christmas holidays in Germany. They reveal an interesting pattern…
Few babies born over Christmas period in Germany
According to Destatis, prospective parents are doing everything they can to make sure their child doesn’t have to share their birthday with J. Christ.
On any given day of the year, there are around 2.069 babies born in Germany. But looking at birth statistics between 2015 and 2024, Destatis found that an average of only 1.470 babies were born on December 24 (Heiligabend) and even fewer were born on Christmas Day, an average of 1.445.
Babies pick up the pace again on December 26, when an average of 1.520 are born, but things generally slow down over the entire Christmas period. On January 1, around 1.524 babies are born.
Most babies are born nine months after Christmas
So, alongside drinking Glühwein, eating Stollen, watching Dinner for One and not having babies, what are Germans doing over the Christmas holidays? Getting gemütlich and making babies.
According to the Destatis figures, the time when babies are the busiest being born in Germany is around the end of September, i.e. nine months after Christmas.
Between 2015 and 2024, the most common day for a baby to be born in Germany was September 21, when an average of 2.385 babies were born.
Babies also love arriving on September 20 and September 28. On September 20, an average of 2.349 babies were born, and on September 28, an average of 2.338 babies were born.
