Which names do you hear German parents calling in the nearby playground or swimming pool? Noah’s almost always there, isn’t he? And Sophia, too?

Noah and Sophia still reigning over German kids

For anyone who keeps up to date with baby name trends in Germany, there are no surprises this year. Noah and Sophia/Sofia have topped the most popular names list in 2025. The pair of them have consistently topped the list - assembled annually by the Association for the German Language (GfdS) - since 2022.

“Noah and Sophia are now more than fashionable names; they have established themselves as modern classics,” GfdS representative Andrea Eva Ewels said in a press release. “Simultaneously, the assent of Theo and Leo shows that short, succinct names are sought after by many parents”.

In recent years, below Noah and Sophia/Sofia, Matteos, Theos, Emmas and Emilias have simply swapped places within the top three spots. Michael, a timeless classic, made a comeback in 2023, but that was brief.

The GfdS list of baby names has been published since 1977 and collects data from more than 750 registration offices (Standesämter) in Germany. For the 2025 ranking, these 750 registration offices shared around 830.000 name registrations with the organisation.

Mohammed among top names in five states

Another timeless classic, Mohammed, was among the top three boys’ names in five federal states: Berlin, Hamburg, Bremen, Hesse and Saarland.

Of course, across the country, there are still plenty of names unique to one baby, at least within that year. In 2025, 65 percent of girls’ names and 64,8 percent of boys' names were only registered at the Standesamt once.
