Online holiday rental bookings in Germany hit all-time high

Driven by a surge in domestic staycations, online bookings for German holiday rentals have reached an all-time high, with domestic stays more than doubling compared to pre-pandemic levels.

Platform bookings reach 68,3 million

Holiday accommodation bookings in Germany have recently hit a new record high, with more residents and international visitors booking a stay in the country than ever before.

Last year, 68,3 million overnight stays were recorded across Germany, a 13 percent increase compared to 2024 and a massive 83 percent more than pre-Covid levels in 2019. The data includes short-term holiday rentals and apartment bookings made through online platforms like Airbnb, Booking.com and Expedia, and was confirmed by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), reports DW.

In fact, residents of Germany are setting a new trend by booking more and more domestic holidays. German tourists booked 48,5 million overnight stays in 2025, 15 percent more than the year before. And when comparing to 2019, domestic bookings have more than doubled.

Who is visiting Germany?

So which internationals are choosing to holiday in Germany? According to the data, tourists from the Netherlands made up the largest number of bookings from abroad, totalling 2,9 million overnight stays. This was followed by people from Poland with 2,1 million and the US with 1,3 million.

Bavaria continues to be the most popular destination, with 10,6 million visitors heading south for a taste of Hofbräu while neighbouring Baden-Württemberg recorded 8,1 million overnight stays, drawing visitors with its famous Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte. Rhine-Westphalia was the third most popular destination.
