Principal Software Engineer CuCa Tech (All Genders)

Role: Principal Software Engineer in Zalando’s Customer Care (CuCa) Tech department, acting as the primary architect for the transition to AI‑powered automated resolution. Leads technical design across the department, defines architecture for AI models in production, ensures high‑volume query handling with a human‑in‑the‑loop fallback, and serves as the expert liaison for product and engineering management. Responsibilities: - Own and drive system architecture for large‑scale AI/ML microservices. - Partner with Applied Scientists to move experimental models into reliable, high‑performing production services at Zalando scale. - Design and implement strategic automation for intelligent query routing and automated response workflows. - Ensure operational excellence and MLOps standards through architecture and production readiness reviews. - Lead and mentor engineers across the department, supporting their growth. - Contribute to engineering standards for AI productionization and influence the internal Tech Radar. Qualifications: - Recognized expert in Python with deep understanding of software design, data modeling, and distributed systems. - Proven track record of deploying AI/ML models into production at scale and managing associated technical debt. - Strong problem‑solving ability to translate ambiguous AI requirements into clear technical designs. - Experience leading cross‑team projects and managing dependencies across multiple delivery teams. - Excellent communication skills to explain complex AI concepts to non‑technical stakeholders and senior management. - Active member of the engineering community and talent champion for hiring and developing senior talent.
