Principal Applied Scientist / Lounge by Zalando (all genders)

Role: As a Principal Applied Scientist at Zalando Lounge, you will foster data‑driven decision‑making by designing experimentation frameworks in key areas of the business and analyzing complex A/B tests. You will serve as an expert on causal inference and statistical modelling, collaborating with economists, applied scientists, data analysts, product managers, software developers, data engineers, and commercial stakeholders. Responsibilities: - Design experimentation frameworks in new areas (KPIs, randomisation units, statistical power analysis, variance reduction, etc.). - Design and execute experiments in complex cases, addressing SUTVA violations and non‑trivial long‑term effects. - Identify causal relationships using observational data to inform product development. - Apply economic modelling and first‑principles thinking to guide business decisions. - Provide constructive scientific feedback and coach junior colleagues. - Set broad scientific roadmaps across the division, leveraging industry track record and scientific leadership. Qualifications: - Ph.D. in Economics with an emphasis on quantitative research methods. - At least two years of professional experience. - Expertise in experimentation and quasi‑experimental research methods (e.g., DML, causal forest, difference‑in‑differences). - Strong scientific problem‑solving skills. - Proficiency in Python and SQL; regular use of AI‑based analytical tools. - Ability to communicate analytical insights to both technical and non‑technical audiences.
