Bürgeramt employees are touring Berlin universities to help new students complete the Anmeldung process without having to leave campus. Here’s what new students should know:

Bürgeramt on tour at Berlin universities

All newcomers to Berlin must complete their Anmeldung (registration) within two weeks of arriving. But anyone who has gone through this process knows that it is nigh impossible to get an appointment at the Bürgeramt (citizens’ office) to complete the registration.

To simplify the process for students, a “mobile Bürgeramt” will tour Berlin universities in October and November. Students don't need to book an appointment, they can simply go to the on-campus mobile Bürgeramt stand and register at their Berlin address.

That’s not all, at the on-campus mobile Bürgeramt, students can apply for a new ID card or passport, or change the PIN connected to their electronic ID (eID). Bürgeramt staff can also help them through the process of applying for BAföG online.

“[With this project] we are showing how quick and flexible Berlin bureaucracy can be,” Berlin’s Chief Digital Officer Martina Klement (CDU) wrote in a press release, “Berlin students can experience first hand what is already possible digitally.”

When will the mobile Bürgeramt be at Berlin universities?

As fresh-faced students arrive in the capital over October and start their first semester in November, the mobile Bürgeramt will tour four of the city’s universities. Here are the dates when the mobile Bürgeramt will be at each campus:

  • October 20: Technische Universität (Hardenbergstraße)
  • October 21: Freie Universität (Otto-von-Simson-Straße)
  • October 22: Berliner Hochschule für Technik (Luxemburger Straße)
  • October 23: Humboldt-Universität (Unter den Linden)
  • November 13: Humboldt-Universität (Unter den Linden)
  • November 18: Humboldt-Universität (Unter den Linden)

If you want to complete your Anmeldung, make sure to bring all of the necessary documents with you on the day. For more information on what to expect from the Anmeldung process, read our guide to registration in Germany.
