German passport ranked 7th-best in world for 2026

The German Reisepass has been named the world's seventh-strongest passport in the Global Passport Ranking 2026. How does it compare to the best-performing passports?

Every year, the Global Passport Ranking assesses passports based on their “mobility score”: the total number of countries a passport holder can enter visa-free, with an electronic travel authorisation (eTA), or with a visa on arrival.

If two passports are designated the same “mobility score”, their visa-free destinations are compared. If the score tie persists, the number of eTA destinations is compared, then the number of visa-on-arrival destinations.

This year, the UAE passport was ranked number one, with a mobility score of 182. In 2026, UAE passport holders can travel to 128 countries visa-free, 44 countries with a visa on arrival, 10 countries with an eTA and 16 countries with a visa.

The Singaporean and Spanish passports rounded out the top three, with respective mobility scores of 175 and 174.

German passport is seventh-strongest in the world

The German passport ranked seventh-strongest in the world, tied with passports from five other EU countries: Denmark, Finland, Italy, the Netherlands and Sweden.

According to the global ranking, German passport holders can travel to 120 destinations visa-free, 42 countries with a visa on arrival, 11 countries with an eTA and 25 with a visa. 

This means German passport holders can travel visa-free to only eight fewer countries than UAE citizens, who have the strongest passport in the world for mobility.

With Germany now having broken naturalisation records for the past five years, more and more foreign residents living and working in Germany for five or more years can now also enjoy the benefits the Reisepass brings.

According to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), 332.500 international residents became German citizens in 2025, up from 291.955 people in 2024 and 200.100 people in 2023.
