QS 2023: 11 German universities among best 200 in the world

Germany has put in another solid performance in the latest QS World University Rankings, with 11 German universities ranking inside the top 200. Although there was some shuffling around of the scores, most of the top-ranking universities in this year’s edition were the same as in previous years.

QS World University Rankings released

Released every year in June, the QS World University Ranking is considered one of the most comprehensive ratings of universities in the world. 2023’s edition is the largest ever undertaken by QS, covering 1.418 universities across 100 countries, with analysis of 16,4 million academic papers and the expert opinions of 151.000 teachers and 99.000 employers.

To compile each university’s score, QS looks at a variety of factors, including their academic reputation, the ratio of teachers to students, the number of international students and faculty members, and the proportion of students that are in jobs shortly after completing their studies.

Once again, the 2023 ranking is dominated by universities from the US, the UK and China. The top 10 is occupied solely by American and British institutions, with the exception of ETH Zurich, in Switzerland, which was the top-ranked university in continental Europe. The top three positions were claimed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Cambridge, and Stanford University.

The best universities in Germany in 2023, according to QS

Germany never performs as well in the QS ranking as in the THE World University Rankings, which last year placed 22 German institutions in the top 200, but the federal republic continues to be well-represented on the QS list nonetheless, with 46 universities ranking, 11 of them inside the top 200.

Munich remains the place to study in Germany, with the two best-ranked German universities on the QS list in 2023 calling the city in Bavaria home. The Technical University of Munich was once again crowned the best university in Germany, ranking just inside the top 50 at 49th overall. It was closely followed by Ludwigs-Maximilians-Universitӓt München, which climbed a few positions to take 59th.
