An arterial street of the Neukölln district in Berlin, Karl-Marx-Straße, has now fully reopened after 15 years of construction work. A street party is planned to celebrate the occasion.

Karl-Marx-Straße reopens to traffic in Neukölln

Karl-Marx-Straße, which stretches 2.970 metres from Hermannplatz to Grenzallee in the Neukölln district of Berlin, has fully reopened after 15 years of construction projects.

Construction work on the street has been progressing from north to south and was originally scheduled to finish in 2021. The road and U-Bahn stations of the U7 line, which run below, have been updated.

According to a press release from the city of Berlin, Karl-Marx-Straße now boasts broader pavements, wider cycle paths, and more traffic light crossings. Alfred-Scholz-Platz, between Anzengruberstraße and Ganghoferstraße, has also been developed for pedestrians.

“Broader pavements and new plaza designs, like that at Alfred-Scholz-Platz, invite Neuköllners to have a wander or drink a coffee on the main street,” district mayor Martin Hikel said in the press release.

Karl-Marx-Straße street party planned for September

To celebrate the completion of the construction, Neukölln local authorities will host a street party on Karl-Marx-Straße on September 26. Further details of the party are yet to be announced.

Berliners should enjoy the newfound freedom of Karl-Marx-Straße while it lasts! A new construction project will begin between Weichselstraße and Hermannplatz in 2027 while the BVG renovates an U-Bahn tunnel.
