Cologne Carnival to go ahead for the vaccinated, recovered and tested

The 2022 carnival season in Cologne should go ahead largely “as normal” for those who have been vaccinated against, recovered from or tested negative for the COVID-19 virus, according to the Cologne Carnival Festival Committee. 

Carnival rules in Düsseldorf will be more strict

Following a meeting between state representatives and carnival organisers, Cologne’s festival planners are optimistic that those who have been vaccinated against COVID-19, have a negative PCR test or have proof of recovery, will be able to attend the event as normal. 

This is in contrast to announcements made by event organisers in Düsseldorf, who have stated that unvaccinated visitors will not be allowed to attend some events which are taking place indoors. 

The rules in Cologne will require a PCR test, though, rather than a (rapid) antigen test, as has been the case in some other federal states. This will allow for the most accurate results to be obtained from a lab, and should keep cases from increasing around carnival time. 

Rapid tests can be used for outdoor events in Cologne

While the more accurate PCR tests are likely to be required for indoor events, the Cologne Carnival Festival Committee feel that rapid tests are suitable for an outdoor setting. 

Klaus-Ludwig-Fess, President of the Federation of German Carnival has praised the inclusiveness of the plans, and hailed them as a “blueprint for many events throughout Germany”.
