In November 2025, the number of electric vehicles (EVs) registered in Germany was nearly 60 percent higher than in the same period the previous year.
58,5 percent increase in electric cars
According to figures recently released by the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), 55.740 EVs were newly registered to drive on German roads in November 2025, this is 58,5 percent more than were newly registered in November 2024. Overall, EVs accounted for 22 percent of vehicles registered in November 2025.
The significant jump is largely due to a corresponding slump in 2024. In late 2023, the SPD-FDP-Greens government scrapped subsidies for EV purchases. As a result, fewer people bought EVs in 2024.
However, in late November 2025, the current CDU/CSU-SPD government announced it would dedicate 3 billion euros to a new subsidy scheme, which will support residents on low and middle incomes to buy EV. The overall goal is to increase the number of EVs on German roads to 15 million by 2030.
Germans are forgetting Tesla and opting for Chinese EVs
So when residents in Germany opt to buy an EV, which car do they choose? 2025 saw Tesla’s reputation in Germany grind to a halt, largely due to CEO Elon Musk’s apparent Hitler salute, his role in the Trump administration and support for the far-right AfD.
March saw Tesla sales in Germany plummet by 76 percent and in a survey of 100.000 people conducted by t-online, 94 percent of respondents said they would never buy a Tesla.
Instead, Germans are opting for Chinese-made EVs. In November alone, 4.000 EVs made by the Chinese company BYD were registered to drive on German roads, compared to 1.800 Tesla EVs.
