German woman turns off hospital roommate’s ventilator

A woman in Germany has been arrested on suspicion of attempted manslaughter after police said that she had turned off her roommate’s ventilator because she found the noise it was making too annoying.

According to staff working at the hospital in Baden-Württemberg, the 72-year-old woman turned the ventilator off multiple times. After the first time, she was told by doctors that the machine was vital to keep her fellow patient alive. The woman apparently then went on to turn the ventilator off again just one hour later.

Fellow patient required intensive care

The actions of the accused woman, who told police she had “felt disturbed by the noise coming from the oxygen device”, meant that her roommate needed to be revived and moved into intensive care, though police have reported that her life was not in danger.

The woman appeared in court on Wednesday and was jailed while investigations continue.
