S15 to connect Wedding and Hauptbahnhof
It’s not every day that Berliners get some good transport news. Deutsche Bahn has announced that a new S-Bahn line connecting the district of Wedding and Hauptbahnhof will begin service on March 30, 2026.
The route is set to be the shortest-ever S-Bahn line in Berlin. Similar to the S7, which splits off into the S75 to Wartenberg and the S7 to Ahrensfelde, the new S15 route will have two different start points.
The train will depart every 10 minutes from S-Bahnhof Westhafen and S-Bahnhof Wedding, then join at S-Bahnhof Perleberger Brücke, a new S-Bahn station in Moabit, and continue to Berlin Hauptbahnhof.
The S-Bahn will arrive at a new underground platform on track 22 at Hauptbahnhof. Another underground S-Bahn platform is currently being built under Europaplatz outside Hauptbahnhof; once this opens, the S15 will arrive and depart from there.
S15 part of wider delayed S21 construction project
The S15 line opening is part of a wider construction project to better connect northern and southern Berlin. The project was initiated in 1992, construction began in 2010, and the line was initially scheduled for completion in 2017, then December 2024, but was delayed multiple times.
Speaking to the dpa in October, Deutsche Bahn representative Ralf Armbruster said the S15 stretch of the line was delayed for several reasons. Track work needed to be replaced or retrofitted, and there was also a shortage of inspectors.
Two construction phases remain. The next will extend the route to Potsdamer Platz by 2036, and the last via Gleisdreieck to Yorckstraße and Yorckstraße Großgörschenstraße by 2037.
