The 9-euro ticket might be offering real savings on public transport in Germany right now, but it’s not always the most convenient option for longer trips. The good news is that this summer’s train bonanza is continuing with a new ticket that lets you travel anywhere in Germany for just 39,90 euros.
Deutsche Bahn has teamed up with the German supermarket chain Edeka to bring out the “Egal-Wohin-Ticket” (No-Matter-Where-Ticket), which allows the holder to book a single trip anywhere within German borders for just 39,90 euros. And unlike the 9-euro ticket, it is valid on both long-distance trains like ICEs, ICs and ECs and regional trains.
Even better, the ticket is suitable for excursions involving the whole family, because children between the ages of six and 14 travel free of charge when accompanied by an adult, so long as the number of children travelling is made clear at the time of booking. Children under the age of six always travel free.
Booking, however, is the ticket’s main drawback. Unlike normal tickets, you can’t buy the Egal-Wohin-Ticket at stations, from ticket machines, or on your mobile phone with the DB app. Instead, getting your hands on the deal is a more convoluted process.
You first need to buy a coupon with an eight-digit booking code from the gift card stand at an Edeka shop (or other shops in the same network, including Marktkauf, BUDNI, nah & gut or trinkgut). You then head over to the Deutsche Bahn website to redeem this code for a ticket of your choice. The tickets are limited to five per person.
The codes are valid up until June 30, 2023, and trains can be booked up to 180 days in advance. The trip must take place before December 9, 2023 - giving you plenty of time to get planning a mega Germany trip!
