Residents should change provider amid German gas price drop, says Verivox

By Olivia Logan

The price comparison site Verivox is urging residents in Germany to take advantage of a gas price drop by signing a contract with new energy providers. If you’d like to change, here’s what you need to do:

Gas prices in Germany fall to lowest level in 2025

Gas prices in Germany have dropped to their lowest level since the start of 2025. As such, price comparison website Verivox is urging residents in Germany to take advantage of the new rates by switching energy providers to sign a contract based on the lower rates.

Gas prices in Germany sat at an average of 10 cents per kilowatt hour in spring 2025, fell to around nine cents per kWh in early summer and again to just 3,3 cents per kWh in August.

“Anyone who fixes their gas prices for the coming 12 months will have price security for the coming winter,” Verivox wrote in a press release. According to a study by the company, a single-family household can save up to 1.000 euros per year by switching to a cheaper contract.

Making the switch can also prevent consumers from having to pay increased gas network charges (Gasnetzentgelten). Gas network charges rose by over 20 percent on average nationwide between 2024 and 2025.

How to swap energy providers in Germany

If Verivox has convinced you, here are the steps required to switch energy providers in Germany. It is a quick and easy process as your new provider will do most of the work.

All you need to do is select a new company and provide them with some details (usually including the details of your bank account, meter number and estimated usage). They will then contact your previous energy supplier to cancel your contract and set everything up in time to ensure a smooth transition.

Note that some energy suppliers offer cheaper rates on the basis of a minimum contract period (Mindesvertraglaufzeit) of up to 24 months. Before you change energy supplier, make sure that you are honouring the terms of your contract, including minimum and notice periods; otherwise, you may be charged an early exit fee.
