Toni the baby pygmy hippo is now on show at Berlin Zoo. The Nilpferd rose to national fame in June after the Zoo requested the general public send in name suggestions shortly after she was born.
As of August 15, visitors to Berlin Zoo can catch a glimpse of Toni the baby hippo. The hippo was born in the capital at the beginning of June alongside a sibling, who died shortly after it was born.
Toni shot to international fame before she had even been named when the zoo requested the public send in name suggestions for the hippo. On August 14, the Nilpferd was christened Toni, after centre-back footballer for die Mannschaft, Antonio Rüdiger.
“From now on the little one will be named Toni,” director Andreas Knieriem said after the zoo received over 20.000 suggestions for names from all across the world.
Hilde, Rosa, Else and Daisy were all submitted, alongside Goldie, Schnuppe, Görli (a local park in Berlin) and Boulettchen (meatball).
