The German Weather Service (DWD) has warned that temperatures in Berlin are forecast to drop to as low as -10 degrees celsius on the night from February 3 to 4.

Freezing weather persists in Berlin

Since early January, Berliners have been navigating slippery pavements, persistent snow and freezing temperatures. Temperatures reached as low as -14 degrees on the night between February 2 and 3.

The winter has more to give. Over the course of the day on February 3, temperatures are expected to be somewhere between -3 and -7 degrees. As the evening sets in, the weather service expects temperatures to fall to somewhere between -6 and -10 degrees.

There will be a little relief on Wednesday and Thursday, when daytime temperatures will be between 0 degrees and -5 degrees. The night time will bring temperatures between -3 and -7 degrees.

BSR handing out grit

If the winter weather is getting you down, why not put on your long johns and head down to the nearest Berliner Stadtreinigung (BSR) lot to claim your complimentary bag of grit.

Locals looking to minimise slip risk on their own driveways and doorsteps can head down to three of the city waste service’s lots; on Forckenbeckstraße in Wilmersdorf, Mühlenstraße in Friedrichshain or Nobelstraße in Neukölln. Interested parties should bring their own containers, such as a bucket, and can claim a maximum of 10 litres of grit per household.

Using de-icing salt is generally permitted only on large roads in the city because it damages trees and vegetation. Anyone caught salting icy streets without official permission risks a fine of up to 10.000 euros.

However, Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU) announced on January 30 that the BSR were permitted "without delay" to use salt on pavements.

Due to the relentlessly slippery streets, outdoor shops in the city have been seeing a significant increase in the sale of shoe spikes.
