The Berlin senate has announced that the city’s 29-euro public transport ticket will go on sale in a number of days and will be valid from July 1, 2024.

Berlin 29-euro ticket to go on sale from April 23

It’s back! After concerns about where the funding would come from, on April 16 Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU) confirmed the return of the 29-euro ticket, a monthly pass for the AB transport zone in Berlin.

“For affordable and sustainable mobility - the senate has cleared the way for a #29EuroTicket today," the Mayor’s office wrote on X. "The ticket will be valid in the Berlin city area from July 1. Sales start on April 23."

Concluding the tweet, Wegner’s team wrote that the go-ahead marked an “important step in advancing the Verkehrswende (transport transition)” by shifting to more sustainable transport services.

Following the success of the 9-euro ticket, which was sold for three months during summer 2022 and was valid across the whole country, Berlin introduced the city-wide 29-euro ticket. However, once the 49-euro Deutschlandticket became available in all federal states in May 2023, the 29-euro version was scrapped by the German government.

Now, the Deutschlandticket, for which funding has been confirmed until 2025, will be on sale parallel to the Berlin 29-euro ticket, for which funding has now been confirmed until at least 2026.

How to get a 29-euro ticket for Berlin

Berlin’s 29-euro ticket will be valid on S-Bahns, U-Bahns, buses and trams within the A and B transport zones from July 1, 2024.

Anyone with a Deutschlandticket or another ticket valid in Berlin can swap to a 29-euro subscription when the tickets go on sale on April 23. Tickets will be available online and at BVG service centres across the city.

The ticket will be available as an annual subscription only, meaning that passengers must commit to a 12-month contract for the first year. However, payments of 29 euros will still be charged monthly to ticket holders’ bank accounts. After the first year, the ticket can be renewed or cancelled monthly.

Each 29-euro ticket will be specific to one passenger, so it will not be possible to share one 29-euro ticket between multiple people. Ticket holders will be allowed to take one child under six and a dog at no extra charge.
