13 people have been injured after a tram derailed and collided with another tram in Düsseldorf early this morning. One person sustained serious injuries.
Trams collide in Düsseldorf
At around 5.40am this morning, the U72 tram derailed in the southern Düsseldorf neighbourhood of Holthausen. A second tram then collided with the derailed tram, injuring 13 people, including one of the tram drivers.
According to a report by Tagesschau, several people were treated at the scene and at a nearby hotel, while nine people were taken to hospital. Emergency services remained at the site long after the crash, with the clean-up process expected to take several hours.
According to police in Düsseldorf, initial assessments suggest the tram derailed as it was set to the incorrect switch and moved into a sudden curve.
Replacement service running for U72 and U76 lines
While the clean-up process continues, Rheinbahn, the local public transport association in Düsseldorf, has set up a tram replacement service for the U72 and U76 lines. However, these lines are also running on a detour route due to closures in Kamper Acker.
The replacement U72 service is terminating at Werstener Dorfstraße and the replacement U76 service at Kaiserslauterner Straße.
