Berlin’s public transport operator, the BVG, has pulled 70 of its 270 electric buses out of service in the capital.

BVG removes damaged e-buses from routes

According to a report from local public broadcaster rbb, Berlin's public transport operator, the BVG, has pulled 70 damaged e-buses out of service.

During a routine check, BVG staff are reported to have found splits in the vehicle frames. Thanks to a warranty, Dutch manufacturer Ebusco will now cover the repair costs. According to the BVG, the damaged buses didn’t pose any risk to passengers.

E-buses will not be replaced, for now

For now, the buses awaiting repair will not be replaced by more e-buses, but by other vehicles. Ebusco is due to begin repair work at the beginning of 2026 and completion is expected within the first quarter of the year.

The news is a setback for the local transport association, which has aims for its entire bus fleet to be made up of electric buses by the early 2030s. According to the association, it runs a total 1.630 buses across Berlin each day.
