German rail operator FlixTrain has announced that it will add 65 new long-distance trains to its fleet, and expand to a total of 650 European destinations.
FlixTrain announces new ICE-L trains
FlixTrain has announced that 65 new ICE-L model trains will serve its routes by 2028. In the first stage, the German rail company will receive 30 trains from Spanish rail manufacturer Talgo, with the option to buy 35 more.
Speaking to the dpa, CEO André Schwämmlein said that production was on schedule. Currently, FlixTrain only has 15 trains, all of which are old models which have been modernised. Because the models are older, riding on the FlixTrains is much louder, warmer and slightly more cramped than the average Deutsche Bahn train.
The ICE-L model trains were initially designed by Talgo for Deutsche Bahn and only hit the tracks in Germany in October 2025. ICE-L trains sit flush with the platform, are spacious and have lighting which adapts according to the time of day.
FlixTrain will run to new destinations
FlixTrain currently operates in 50 cities across Germany, Austria, Sweden and the Netherlands. Alongside buying the new train models, Schwämmlein said the company would expand its network.
“We are pursuing a long-term strategy with FlixTrain and will significantly expand our offering in the coming years," André Schwämmlein said in a press release, “With a strong fleet expansion we are beginning a new era of train travel in Germany and Europe.”
Schwämmlein added that the company plans to expand its market share and contribute to expanding the market. Deutsche Bahn currently holds a 95 percent share of the market.
