Lufthansa scraps 20.000 short-distance flights until October to save approximately 40.000 tons of kerosene (jet fuel). The company is looking to drastically decrease their flight plan.

Lufthansa reduces flights from Germany

According to the tagesschau, Lufthansa has stated that with the price of kerosene having doubled since the US-Israeli war on Iran, non-beneficial flights have to be eliminated.

A number of flights for April and May have already been cancelled. This specifically concerns connections from Frankfurt to both Poland and Norway. According to Lufthansa, passengers have already been informed. Despite this, the airline says fuel for summer flights is supposedly secured.

In return, the airline plans to improve and expand connections via hubs in Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, Vienna, Brussels, and Rome, providing customers with greater access to the global flight network.

Further information on Lufthansa's future connections will be released by the beginning of May.

Lufthansa closes CityLine

In advance of the cancellation of numerous flights, Lufthansa announced that it would close its CityLine branch on April 16, 2026. The tagesschau reports that CityLine was originally scheduled to close in 2028, but rising fuel costs and ongoing strikes at the branch led to its immediate closure last week.

Lufthansa CityLine was a regional airline based in Munich, specialising in domestic and short-distance flights in Europe. The 27 operational jets will be taken out of use immediately.

According to Lufthansa's head of finance, all former employees have been released and offered new positions. The Unabhängige Flugbegleiter Organisation (Independent Flight Attendant Union) has reacted in shock and condemns Lufthansa's “war against their own people”.
