If you are looking to expand your current film knowledge this summer, then look no further as the Munich International Film Festival (Filmfest München) is set to return. Taking place annually in Munich since 1983, the event is the largest summer film festival in Germany with over 80.000 admissions each year, second only in size to Berlin’s International Film Festival.

See more than 200 films on the big screen

The Munich Film Festival screens more than 200 films, feature-length documentaries and TV movies each year at a number of cinemas and has been credited with helping discover new, talented filmmakers. The majority of the films screened at the festival are either German, European or world premieres from up-and-coming and acclaimed film producers.

Celebrating the best of both international and German films from the past year, the festival offers numerous awards, such as the CineMerit Award, for people who have made key contributions to film as an art form; the CineVision Award, for the best international film by an emerging director; and the One-Future-Prize, for the best film to showcase the world with one common future.

More than just an International Film Festival

The Munich International Film Festival offers much more than just film screenings - it also includes a series of events, such as workshops, panel discussions, parties and even a special children’s section, the Kinderfilmfest.

How to get to the Munich International Film Festival

The film’s festival centre is located within the cultural hub Gasteig, which is easily accessible via public transport (all S-Bahn lines S1 - S8) and car. However a number of the screenings and events are taking place at external cinemas, so check where your screening or event is held ahead of time!
