The German Mozart Festival in Augsburg is one of the most prolific and international festivals dedicated to Mozart in Germany!

Augsburg celebrates Mozart and his music

Not only does the festival put the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart on a pedestal, but it also celebrates the legacy of his father, Leopold Mozart, who was an Augsburg native. Though born in Augsburg, Leopold Mozart raised his musically talented son and daughter in Salzburg, Austria. Leopold's childhood home is now a museum in downtown Augsburg - known as the Mozart House!

The kinds of concerts you can attend at German Mozart Festival ranges from intimate chamber music recitals to massive symphonies and oratorios in vast churches and concert halls. The festival’s orchestra in residence is the prestigious Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin.

Mozart and Beethoven

The festival typically celebrates Mozart’s contemporaries too, and this year, the interplay between Mozart and Beethoven will be in the spotlight. Mozart was a few years older than Beethoven, but each had admiration for the other – and indeed, nowadays, both composers are towering figures in the realm of music.

Mozart said that the young Beethoven would “make a name for himself sometime in the world." Similarly, Beethoven said, “I have always counted myself among the greatest admirers of Mozart.” And so a festival dedicated to the two of them seems perfectly apt.

German Mozart Festival 2020 looks for connections and contrasts between Mozart and Beethoven through their iconic compositions. The highlights will be their signature works: Mozart’s Requiem and Beethoven’s Fifth and Sixth Symphonies.
