Imperial City Festival
A throwback to the “good old days”, the Imperial City Festival celebrates the prosperous days of a bygone era in the quaint little town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Located between the cities of Stuttgart and Nuremberg, this town is known for its beautiful and unique medieval architecture, which serves as the ideal backdrop for the festival.
Celebrate the ‘good old days’ at Rothenburg
At the start of September each year, Rothenburg transforms into a magnificent open-air theatre, where the townsfolk and people from surrounding areas revive the old traditions and customs of the medieval past for the Imperial City Festival.
The entire old city is turned into one huge, medieval camp, as the Imperial City Festival kicks off with a grand torch-light procession on Friday evening, led by the historical group through the town to the market square, the centre of the event. The procession is accompanied by thundering cannons and a beautiful firework display that lights up up the town.
Preserving and revitalizing the past
The festival continues over the next two days, with light-hearted festivities and activities taking place in the middle of the city. Expect to see and taste many special culinary treats at the festival as well, from the finest wines to traditional dishes from this region of Germany.
Developed to help preserve and revitalise the past, many of the festival's participants are members of historical reenactment groups, so you can expect an authentic atmosphere. For example, thousands of metres of fabric are used to reproduce the clothing worn back in the day, original or replica equipment is used and traditional knight’s camps and stalls are set up.
