Germany’s annual table tennis competition returns for 2020 and promises to be as intense as ever. With lightning-fast games, a captivating programme and the best of the best competing in the world rankings, this is one sporting event you do not want to miss.

Highlights of the ITTF World Tour

The German Open was first held in 1925 and featured on the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) World Tour schedule in 1999 and every year since 2001. However, in 2016, the ITTF announced that the German city of Magdeburg would be one of six cities to host a World Tour Platinum event, the top tier of the ITTF World Tour.

The German Open has been described as “one of the highlights of the ITTF World Tour”, and it’s easy to see why. As a Platinum Event, the stakes are high, winnings are high, and the games are intense.

The best in the world

The event promises to exhibit the highest level of table tennis with current Olympic and World Champion, Ma Long, returning to defend his title. He will face heavy opposition from German stars, Timo Boll and Dimitrij Ovtcharov. Japan’s Kasumi Ishikawa will also return, hoping to add yet another title to her impressive collection.

The event will also determine two teams, in the mixed doubles, that will qualify for the Olympic Games in Tokyo, so a lot is on the line. Germany has already qualified for the Olympic mixed doubles, thanks to the skills of Patrick Franziska and Petrissa Solja.
