A new Christmas market outside the famous KaDeWe department store will serve Bratwurst, Spätzle, and Glühwein, but in a glamorous setting.
New Christmas market to open in front of KaDeWe
In case over 100 Christmas markets weren’t enough, this Christmas season, there will be a new Weihnachtsmarkt on the festive scene in Berlin. Outside the iconic KaDeWe department store, on Wittenbergplatz Südplatz, more than 30 stands will be selling all the classics, Glühwein, Spätzle, Bratwurst, roasted chestnuts and Lebkuchen.
Alongside the 30 stands, a stage will feature a range of one-time shows. “Every piece will show just once. Everything will be very classy; we are aligning ourselves with KaDeWe,” event organiser Axel Kaiser told Berliner Morgenpost.
Visitors will be able to enjoy all the glamour at an “affordable price”, according to Kaiser. The market will open on November 24 and run until January 1, from Sundays to Thursdays from 11am to 9pm and Fridays and Saturdays from 11am to 10pm.
Kaiser looking to enliven Wittenbergplatz with Weihnachtsmarkt
Speaking to Berliner Morgenpost, Kaiser said he hoped his new market would enliven Wittenbergplatz in City West. “When I sit in my office, I look directly onto Wittenbergplatz,” Kaiser explained. “It is sad to see how it has been abandoned. [...] At least for a few weeks, the market will make the south side of the square more beautiful.”
The event planner is stalwart of the Berlin Christmas market world and previously ran a Glühwein stall at the Breitscheidplatz market until stall rents doubled. The new KaDeWe classy market has been three years in the making, but Kaiser met a few hurdles.
“The process of applying for permission was not easy,” he told the local paper. Organising a security plan was among the more difficult tasks, with security costs eventually running up to a five-figure sum.
