The German supermarket chain has announced that it will remove around 80 brands of beer from its shelves. Some of the most popular brands are set to go.
Franziskaner, Beck’s and more to be removed from Edeka
Edeka, the largest supermarket chain in Germany, has announced that 80 beer brands will be removed from the supermarket’s shelves, according to a report from the dpa.
Popular brands, such as Becks, Franziskaner, Corona, Löwenbräu, San Miguel, Spaten and Hasseröder are all on the list of brands which will no longer be available at the chain.
The decision is due to an ongoing disagreement between Edeka and the international drink and brewing company from Belgium, AB InBev. While Edeka wants to increase prices by up to 20 cents per bottle, AB InBev says that there is no production cost justification for such increases.
Edeka attempts to put more pressure on AB InBev
Edeka has already stopped orders for certain beer brands and reduced order numbers for other brands. The decision to stop stocking 80 beer brands is the supermarket’s latest attempt to increase pressure on AB InBev amid negotiations.
According to the supermarket chain, existing beer stocks from AB InBev will still be sold. It is yet unclear when customers will begin to notice that certain beer brands are unavailable. If Edeka and AB InBev reach an agreement, the brands should return to the shelves.
