Entrance tickets for the Berliner Dom usually go for 10 euros a pop. But on February 28, between 10am and 6pm, anyone will be able to enter the iconic protestant cathedral on Museum Island for free.
The cathedral was constructed between 1894 and 1905, severely damaged during World War II, faced potential demolition in the 1950s, was reconstructed in the 1970s and eventually re-inaugurated in 1993.
Inside, visitors can enjoy the frescos on the dome interior, the precious stone mosaics of the Hohenzollern Crypt and ascend the cathedral’s 270 steps for an excellent view of Berlin.
Hohenzollern Crypt reopening
Berliner Dom’s doors open day is taking place to celebrate the reopening of the Hohenzollern Crypt, which has been closed for construction work since March 2020.
From 1545 onwards, the crypt was the burial place for members of the Hohenzollern family. The Hohenzollerns were a royal family originating from Swabia in the 11th century, which became a dynasty and was eventually overthrown when the Weimar Republic was established.
Between the 16th and 20th centuries, 94 members of the Hohenzollern family were buried in the crypt. Visitors can see their coffins, made of stone, metal and wood.
