A date has been set for the reopening of Berlin’s GDR-era fairground, Spreepark. Here’s what visitors can expect when the gates open in spring next year.
Reopen date set for Spreepark
Grün Berlin GmbH, the state-owned company responsible for maintaining and developing green spaces in Berlin, has announced that the renovated Spreepark will reopen to the public in spring 2027.
Initially opening in East Berlin in 1969, the fairground closed in 2002 and remained abandoned for an extended period, gaining a cult status due to its popularity among urban explorers and being featured in multiple films and music videos.
Berlin local authorities bought the grounds in 2014 and in 2016 selected Grün Berlin GmbH to develop a new amusement park. The first significant renovation work began in 2019 and is now being finalised.
Many original Spreepark features return
When the gates reopen, visitors can expect an arts and culture space with a complete makeover to the tune of 126 million euros.
One of the most significant changes is the addition of a nearby ship jetty. The jetty and ferry connections (which are free with a Berlin public transport pass or Deutschlandticket) will give visitors a new way to reach the park, which lies on the banks of the Spree River.
Many of the park’s original GDR features have also been refurbished in their original style, including the Ferris wheel and the Eierhäuschen, which will house exhibition and residence rooms. The block of English-village-style buildings, which was damaged in a 2014 fire, will be replaced by a large, circus-tent-like timber building.
Grün Berlin says that with the reopening, Spreepark “is once again becoming a cultural institution in the capital” and “a public open space will once again be created between Treptower Park and Baumschulenweg for all citizens and guests of the city”.
